Banksy rumoured to be behind airport terminal installation at Glastonbury festival

An installation at Glastonbury has sparked rumours Banksy may be behind it.

Festival revellers have been checking out a temporary airport terminal constructed from salvaged parts of Heathrow’s demolished first terminal.

The immersive art experience and nightclub – brought to technicolour life by the barrelling sound systems of Notting Hill and St Paul’s carnival – honours today’s migrants with the message that ‘no human is illegal’, and is staffed by members of the Cleaners & Allied Independent Workers Union.

This isn’t the first time Banksy’s art has featured at the festival, as Stormzy performed in a Union Jack vest designed by the street artist in 2019.

Pop icons Sugababes paved the way with their Glastonbury performance in 2022 – but they had no idea

The Sugababes had no idea how iconic they’d be at Glastonbury when they first performed in 2022, shocked at the crowd they drew in.

Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy ‘didn’t think anyone would come to see us,’ they told the BBC, but were left with an ‘overwhelming’ crowd, with extra security needed.

‘We were one of the first, if not the first, female pop band to play the main stage,’ Keisha recalled, adding: ‘It was very controversial at the time.

‘I remember having conversations about what to do if anyone threw a bottle of pee at us.’

Their 2022 gig was Siobhan’s first time on one of the outdoor stages, but Keisha and Mutya previously played the Pyramid in 2003, after the first Sugababes line-up shuffle.

This year, they’ll be taking to the festival’s third-biggest stage, West Holts, on Friday evening.

In case you missed last night’s drone show

The opening night of the festival saw a drone show and fireworks over the Pyramid Stage.

Designed by Celestial, a local company from the nearby Somerset village, Norton Saint Philip, the drone show was a new addition for 2024’s edition of the event.

It featured 576 drones and was inspired by themes of peace and togetherness, according to organisers.

‘Oiiii @glastonbury that drone show was absolutely eliteeee! I was jumping!’ Dan wrote on X.

‘Wow! #Glastonbury drone show was incredible!’ Ross added.

What to expect on Thursday at Glastonbury

The main stages at Worthy Farm are not set to open until Friday, with pop singer Dua Lipa headlining the Pyramid Stage that evening before rock band Coldplay and soul singer SZA play the famous stage on Saturday and Sunday.

Canadian country star Shania Twain will play the coveted Legends slot on Sunday afternoon.

Hundreds of acts will perform on Thursday with various smaller stages across the site hosting acts including singer and DJ Shygirl and electronic musician Joy Orbison, who will both appear at dance stage Levels.

Fellow DJ MJ Cole will perform a set at Stonebridge Bar, while London-based artist Shy One will appear at the Glade stage.

Also happening on Thursday, fitness expert Joe Wicks will lead a group exercise session for festival-goers – raising their heart rates at the Gateway stage.

Meanwhile, Glastonbury founder Sir Michael Eavis is expected to do his traditional musical performance, covering a series of classics with his band.

Last year, hundreds of fans chanted ‘Michael’ as the veteran organiser, 88, was wheeled on to The Park Stage on an office chair to perform as he recovered from an operation on his leg.

Weather update for Thursday: Some rain but no washout expected

A Met Office spokesperson told the PA news agency that fans arriving on Thursday can expect conditions to be ‘a little cloudy’ with the ‘odd spot of rain’ before it turns drier with plenty of sunny spells in the afternoon and some isolated showers.

It is expected to be ‘a little breezy’ with a high of 21C.

The weather across the weekend is expected to stay ‘mostly dry with plenty of sunny spells’ and temperatures around average for June, dropping to 18C on Friday before rising to 19C and 21C on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Glastonbury Day 2 kicks off with thousands more set to arrive

Good morning and welcome to day 2 at Glastonbury!

Thousands of fans arriving at Worthy Farm today can expect some showers but fears of a washout or scorching heatwave appear to have been allayed.

Mostly dry conditions and cooling temperatures are predicted across the weekend, after a drone show and fireworks over the Pyramid Stage announced the opening of the festival in Pilton, Somerset, on Wednesday night.

Designed by Celestial, a local company from the nearby Somerset village, Norton Saint Philip, the drone show was a new addition for 2024’s edition of the event – featuring 576 drones and inspired by themes of peace and togetherness, according to organisers.

The main news from day one included Shadow Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner pulling out of a panel of the festival and festivalgoers blocking up the motorways and railways as they travelled to Worthy Farm.

The cost of beverages at the festival shocked fans as many worked out it was most cost-effective to drink beer all weekend and avoid non-alcoholic drinks.

Shania Twain also revealed that she had plans to include a horse in her Legend set performance, and it was rumoured that Kasabian is set to perform at the gig, as several predictions for surprise acts began circling the internet.
