Two charged after downtown Calgary hit-and-run and assault with a weapon

A man and a woman have been charged after a group dispute turned violent, resulting in assault with a weapon and a hit-and-run in downtown Calgary early Monday morning.

Around 4 a.m. on Monday, a member from a group of individuals walking in the area of Dermot Baldwin Way S.E. deployed bear spray following a verbal altercation within the group.

Police say a man and a woman left the group and were walking towards their parked vehicle nearby when they were approached from behind by two women. One of the women used an edged weapon to strike the female victim in the head.

The two victims of the attack got into their vehicle, allegedly driving toward and striking the two previous assailants. The suspect who used the edged weapon was arrested and transported to hospital for injuries sustained when struck by the vehicle.

The vehicle fled westbound onto Fifth Avenue S.E., heading to a nearby medical facility for treatment of their injuries.

The driver, Paris Samuel Appenheimer, 43, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. He has been released from custody with his next court date scheduled for July 31.

The suspect who used the edged weapon, Chekesha George, 24, has been charged with assault with a weapon and breach of probation. She is set to appear in court on June 25.
