Troubled NYC man who tried to drown his twin toddlers at Conn. beach ordered held on $2M bail

A disturbed Queens man accused of trying to drown his twin toddlers at a Connecticut beach over the weekend was ordered held on $2 million bail at his first court appearance Monday.

Romney Desronvil, 41, is charged with attempted murder following the harrowing Saturday morning incident that saw hero West Haven cops save the frightened 3-year-olds from a watery grave.

West Haven Mayor Dorinda Borer called the incident “unthinkable” on Sunday.

“I went with one of the officers to see their mom this morning at the hospital,” Dorer said on Facebook.

“She had rushed from NY in the middle of the night to be with her children and has been at the hospital around the clock so I wanted to let her know that even though they are far from home they have an entire community here that cares for them and we will provide whatever she needs; a hotel, meals, clothing, or a big hug,” Dorer said in the post.

In a separate Facebook post Monday police said both kids are doing well.

“The West Haven Police Department was informed that both children have made significant improvement and are no longer intubated,” the post said. “They’re still under care of medical staff but are progressing daily! Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”

Police said one of their officers was on patrol near Ocean and Dawson avenues around 2:30 a.m. Saturday when he spotted a Nissan SUV parked on the beach and heard “significant screaming.”

The cop allegedly spotted Desronvil in the water holding the two youngsters.

The distraught father, who told police he was in a tumultuous relationship with the children’s mother, yelled for cops to stay back and waded deeper into the surf, cops said.

The cop, convinced the father was “deliberately drowning his children,” called for backup and went after the children, who were pulled away from Desronvil and onto the shore.

Both were taken to Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, where they are in critical condition.

Three West Haven officers involved in the rescue suffered minor injuries, officials said.

In records released Monday, Desronvil allegedly admitted to police that he took the children to the beach amid a troubled relationship with their mom, and claimed he found she had “witchcraft material.”

His attorney declined to comment after the court proceedings.
