Pro-Palestinian protesters set up encampment at Victoria Square

It marks the first such encampment in a public space in Montreal.

Pro-Palestinian protesters erect an encampment at Victoria Square in downtown Montreal on Saturday.

It marks the first encampment in a public space in Montreal and is located near the offices of the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) and Quebec’s Ministère des Relations internationales et de la Francophonie (MRIF).

Dubbed the Al-Sumud People’s Encampment, the organizers of Divest for Palestine Collective demand the Caisse divest $14.2 billion from 87 companies it claims are “complicit in the Israeli occupation” in Gaza.

They also want the Quebec’s office in Tel Aviv to be shut down.

Pro-Palestinian protesters on April 27 set up an encampment at McGill University and human-rights lawyers say police should leave the encampment alone despite pressure from some quarters to have it forcibly removed.

Another encampment appeared at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) campus on May 12, but protesters say they will dismantle it.
