One person arrested near Carstairs after fleeing Calgary, exchanging gunfire with police

One person was arrested in Carstairs early Saturday morning after exchanging gunfire with police, with neither parties sustaining injuries, according to RCMP.

The incident has been forwarded to Alberta’s serious-incident watchdog.

Alberta RCMP were initially alerted by Calgary police of a suspect who had fled police and was being followed by Helicopter Air Watch for Community Safety (HAWCS). Upon being notified, Alberta RCMP took responsibility for the incident.

Police were successful in disabling the car on Highway 2 near Highway 581 — an approximately 40-minute drive north of Calgary.

Gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and police after authorities set up a traffic stop, RCMP said. The suspect eventually surrendered to police after authorities made verbal contact with the person and de-escalated the situation, with the suspect and officers leaving the situation with no injuries.

The Alberta RCMP are thankful for the eventual outcome of this incident, demonstrating effective police intervention in high-risk situations for which officers are highly trained,” RCMP said in a statement.

The incident has been reported to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team and it will be investigated by the independent body.
