Some New Yorkers are going toe to toe over one summertime trend.
A video went viral last week of a woman describing her disgust at people wearing flip flops in the Big Apple.
“You’re basically walking barefoot through New York City at that point,” Selena Audrey, 25, said. “To me, it’s like walking on the bare concrete. Your feet get so dirty.”
“I have a phobia of germs . . . so the idea of getting my feet dirty weirded me out at that moment, so I just turned my camera on and talked about it,” Audrey told The Post.
“I love flip flops,” she added. “I love a good one dollar flip flop sale at Old Navy – I get them in every color. I love them so much, but I’m wearing them to the pool or to the beach or to run errands, I’m not wearing them on dirty New York City concrete.”
Angry commenters argued that she might not be a real New Yorker.
“This has never been a thing. At this point, the transplants are making up their own outrage. Just carry some baby wipes and wipe your feet down. You’ll be alright,” one Instagram user said.
“Girl hush and wash your feet when you get home,” another chimed in.
“When you live in Manhattan, it’s your island, live that island life!” added another flip flop enthusiast.
Audrey took the video down after receiving hateful comments but it was shared by the viral Instagram account New Yorkers.
The once-cheap footwear has made the transition from comfort to chic in recent years, with brands putting their own spin on the shoe and even adding platforms and heels.
According to The Business of Fashion, google searches for platform flip flops increased by 255% this spring.
“You just slip them on and that’s why a lot of people wear flip flops, and a lot of them are cute,” Maya Williams, 38, told The Post this month while wearing a $400 Versace pair.
Kinga Adamowicz, 48, said she has 10 pairs of the summer staple.
“The city is considered a little dirtier I guess but I can just go home and wash my feet so I don’t mind it as much,” Adamowicz said.
And the trend doesn’t exclude men.
“For me, I don’t care anymore. I’m comfortable,” said Ismali Hassan, 79, wearing a pair of HEYDUDE flip flops.
The Post reported this month that the lure of the sandals may actually come from people’s opposition to them.
“There’s something quite physical about people’s disdain for the flip-flop, which makes them more radical,” PODCASTER Biz Sherbert told Vogue.
