Toyota Canada recalls 11,858 Grand Highlander and Lexus TX SUVs

The issue is a curtain airbag that may not properly deploy if the driver’s window is down

  • Toyota is recalling 11,858 Grand Highlander and Lexus TX vehicles in Canada, plus 145,000 in the U.S.
  • The curtain airbag may not deploy properly in a crash if the driver’s window is down
  • The automaker is working on a fix and will notify owners in mid-August 2024

The recall affects approximately 9,039 Grand Highlanders, and 2,819 TX vehicles. In the U.S., the recall is for about 145,000 of the two combined. Reports are that production has temporarily halted in the factory in Princeton, Indiana where the two vehicles are built.

Toyota said that the “curtain shield airbag on the driver’s side may not deploy as intended during certain crashes if the driver’s window is rolled down.” There was no mention of exactly what those crashes entail, but Toyota added that this means the vehicles “may not meet a federal safety standard, increasing the risk of injury during certain crashes.”

Toyota is working on a solution for the problem, and owners of the affected vehicles will receive a notice in the mail by the middle of August 2024. As with all safety-related recalls, the repair will be done free of charge at any authorized Toyota dealership.

Car companies are required to send recall notices by mail to vehicle owners. If you move, or if you buy a used vehicle, contact the automaker’s customer support to have your current address on file, so any recalls will make their way to your mailbox.
