LEGO adds Ferrari F40, Lambo Countach to catalogue

The two iconic ’80s supercars are also joined by a new NASCAR product in the toy-brick company’s Speed Champions line

  • LEGO mid-June brought Ferrari’s F40 and a NASCAR Camaro to its Speed Champions line
  • A fresh entrant into the more-detailed Icons Collection was also introduced: the Lamborghini Countach
  • The angular ’80s supercars hew closely to their originals (and have us reaching for our wallets)

The old saw that one is never too old to play with LEGO blocks is absolutely true around these parts. Most of us toiling for this august publication have at least one vehicular creation from the Danish masters in our homes, with your author staring down a bricked copy of the mighty Ferrari F40 every time he strolls into his home office.

Now, the crew at LEGO are adding to this type of selection by including the Ferrari F40 and a NASCAR-themed Camaro to its Speed Champions line of products. For those not in the know, sets in the Speed Champions column are smaller than a full-blown-box-of-unassembled-LEGO car, generally checking in between 200 and 400 pieces, compared to the 1,000-plus pieces typically found in kits from the Creator Expert line.

The larger-scale F40 from this line that I mentioned off the top – it’s watching over my shoulder as I type this – is comprised of 1,158 pieces, to be exact, though I wouldn’t call myself an “expert” in anything, despite the name of its series.

But with a smaller size also comes a more palatable price. Speed Champions iterations of the F40 should retail for about US$35 when the sets go on sale later this summer, less than one-third the price of an F40 replicated in a big Creator Expert set.

It is worth noting the F40 is immediately recognizable as itself in either the large or small form. The same cannot be said for some other LEGO efforts, such as a few Porsche 911 models which simply look pre-crashed. Equal criticism is levelled at the NASCAR-themed Camaro joining the Speed Champions line when the F40 appears; maybe if you look at it from across the room whilst hopping on one foot and squinting.

Even further up the LEGO food chain are models in the Icons Collection. The first week of July will see the addition of a Lamborghini Countach to that line of brick sets, showing up in all its cocaine-fuelled 1980s glory. It will be comprised of 1,506 pieces, and carry a US$179.99 price tag when it goes on sale in America early next month. Thanks to its wedge design, the Lambo – like the F40 – is instantly recognizable in LEGO form. Owing to the complexity of the kit, it will feature movable doors and measure over 30 centimetres (one foot) in length.

Hey — if this is yer dream car but you can’t source the real thing, there are worse spends of money than to pop for LEGO recreations. After all, it’s what I did with the F40.
