The Mets finally stopped hitting the snooze button for Sunday’s early start time at the beginning of the eighth inning.
Francisco Lindor hit a go-ahead homer, but the fun was just starting for the Mets. Mark Vientos delivered an insurance-run RBI and Brandon Nimmo the comfort food with a two-run homer.
The late rally complete, the Mets — following a 12:06 p.m. start against the Cubs to accommodate an exclusive window streaming-service broadcast — won 6-2 at Citi Field in the series rubber game.
It was a second straight series victory for the Mets after losing their previous two.
Griffin Canning was sharp for the Mets over six innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Pete Crow-Armstrong’s homer in the sixth accounted for the only scoring against him.
It was a fifth straight start for Canning with one earned run or less surrendered. Canning owns a 2.36 ERA overall.
Luis Torrens delivered an RBI triple in the second that produced the game’s first run. Starling Marte drew a two-out walk before Torrens hit a shot off the fence in left-center between converging outfielders Seiya Suzuki and Crow-Armstrong.
Canning escaped trouble in the third, after allowing a leadoff single to Dansby Swanson and walking Justin Turner. Canning responded by retiring the next three batters.
Nimmo and Marte each singled with two outs in the fourth, but both were left stranded when Torrens was retired.
Luisangel Acuna singled leading off the fifth and was picked off.
Crow-Armstrong tied it 1-1 with a homer in the sixth. Canning threw a 94-mph four-seamer that Crow-Armstrong hammered into the right-field porch for his 10th homer of the season.
Torrens left the game in the sixth after taking a foul tip to the groin area. Francisco Alvarez replaced Torrens behind the plate.
Vientos delivered a go-ahead homer with two outs in the sixth. Matthew Boyd threw a first-pitch fastball that Vientos hit over the left-field fence.
Nico Hoerner tied it 2-2 with an RBI double against Reed Garrett in the seventh. Garrett walked Michael Busch leading off the inning before allowing his first earned run in his last four appearances.
Lindor homered leading off the ninth and Pete Alonso doubled with one out before Vientos singled him home. Nimmo followed with a two-run blast.
