Carrie Coon offered a terse response to Meghan McCain’s “The White Lotus” criticism – before responding to rumors she left Marvel over problems with her pay.
The “Gilded Age” actress addressed McCain’s issue with Season 3 of the hit HBO show on Monday during an interview with Variety.
When asked if she was “surprised” by “how invested” McCain was in her character’s storyline, the actress offered a cold, two-sentence comeback.
“I hope Meghan enjoyed the finale,” told the outlet. “I’m glad she’s watching the show.”
Coon, 44, and McCain, 40, have been fighting on social media over their political differences.
The “Fargo” actress, who plays lawyer and divorcée Laurie in the latest season of “The White Lotus,” said that “people like Meghan McCain and her community are really gratified to see a conservative person on television” during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on April 2.
Coon’s character is a Democrat vacationing in Thailand with two of her closest friends. One of Laurie’s pals, Kate (played by Leslie Bibb), suggests that she voted for President Donald Trump in one of the episodes, which divides the trio.
“I have conservative people in my life who reached out to me to say that was an awesome conversation, because I don’t think it vilified Kate,” Coon said then of a scene that showed Laurie and Kate debating over their differing political views.
McCain later took to X to respond to Coon’s comments.
“Yes Carrie, I am ‘gratified’ that the conservative character represented on White Lotus is the responsible, family oriented one not making a fool of herself,” the daughter of the late GOP Senator John McCain wrote.
“Unlike the progressive liberal you’re representing who is sleeping with hotel staff and showing her tits to everyone,” McCain added in the tweet, referencing a scene where Coon’s character gets drunk and flashes a group of hotel staffers.
The pair had previously traded blows when Coon slammed McCain in March over her support of Trump following a speech he gave to Congress.
“Who’s gonna tell her?” Coon tweeted after McCain called the president’s speech “beautiful.”
Elsewhere in her Variety interview, Coon responded to her husband’s claim that she did not return for Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019 because the studio refused to pay her more money than they did for “Avengers: Infinity War” one year prior.
“I believe [Marvel] went to her for the second one, and they asked her to be in the second one,” Coon’s husband, Tracy Letts, 59, said on “The Big Picture” podcast. “And she said, ‘Well, the first one is the most successful movie ever made. Are you going to pay me any more money?’ And they said, ‘No. We’re not going to pay you any more money.’”
“She said, ‘Wow, you’re not going to pay me any more money, then I don’t think I’m going to do it,’” Letts, who is also an actor, added. “And they said, ‘Well, you should feel yourself fortunate to be part of the Marvel Universe.’ So she declined.”
Coon, who played Proxima Midnight in “Avengers: Infinity War,” admitted in the Variety interview that her husband’s claims were true.
“I’ll say, I’m sure men are told that,” the actress responded when asked whether that was “something a man would ever be told.”
“I think what it’s more about is what’s driving our industry — like you should be lucky to be part of this engine that is making money in our industry,” she said.
“The lesson there is that my time is more valuable elsewhere,” Coon added after a lengthy metaphor about being denied a raise after so many years with a company. “And so I part ways with this company, everybody amicably, because my time, especially as a person with a family, is more valuable than that.”
Coon added that her decision not to return to the franchise was “purely a business decision.”
“I think people operate under a tremendous misunderstanding about what we’re paid in those circumstances,” she told Variety. “I think if people knew, I think they’d be surprised, and wouldn’t be surprised at the decision I made.”
“Avengers: Infinity War” raked in more than $2 billion at the global box office. “Avengers: Endgame” went on to gross a record-breaking $2.8 billion worldwide, per Business Insider.
As for “The White Lotus,” the show’s third season ended with a fiery and bloody finale on Sunday night.
