Jon Stewart took aim at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for voting in favor of a Republican spending bill — claiming that the New York Democrat likely “got a little something out of this.”
Stewart — who wore glasses low on the bridge of his nose for an unflattering impression of “Chucky” — tore into the Democrat for abandoning his party on the GOP spending bill and failing to take a strong stance against the Trump administration.
“What the f–k happened?” Stewart exclaimed during an eight-minute rant on “The Daily Show.”
“I know what’s going on here,” he continued. “You probably got a little something out of this, didn’t you? You wouldn’t have given up that power for leverage on the budget for nothing. My guess is Chucky got some cheese.”
The left-leaning comedian played a clip of Schumer proclaiming that “Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate” — followed by footage of the senator voting for the Republicans’ bill, to loud boos from “The Daily Show” audience members.
“Senator Schumer, uh, no disrespect, but you are a disgrace to Jewish stereotypes about financial negotiations,” Stewart said jokingly. “I thought the whole point of us is that’s what we do!”
“What are you doing? It felt like this was a total capitulation,” he added.
He attacked Schumer’s talking point that negotiations with Republicans are smooth sailing in the gym, when GOPers “lose their inhibitions.”
“They’re only being agreeable with you because they want you to leave them alone in the gym … on the stationary bike,” Stewart said with a laugh.
“Peddling really hard and not going anywhere — it’s a great metaphor for the Democratic Party right now,” he added.
Stewart also torched a strategy Schumer mentioned during his interview with the New York Times Magazine — that Democrats would “keep at it” until President Trump’s approval rating dips below 40%. At the time of the interview, Trump had 48% approval, Schumer said.
At the sub-40% mark, Schumer said, Republicans will be more likely to speak with Democrats.
“You’re gonna keep at it, keep at it, keep at it — at what?” Stewart said. “This was it!”
He added that the “grand plan” from the Democratic Party is seemingly to “keep fecklessly complaining until the 48 approval comes down.”
