St. John’s started late in Rick Pitino’s first season — months late.

It had almost an entirely new roster to fill and was like a runner who was laps behind its competitors.

There was only so much ground the Storm could make up.

“What we learned is, a lot of the portal stuff was done in January,” associate head coach Steve Masiello said.
