Luna named as NYC’s most popular dog name in 2024

New Yorkers are mutts for this name.

Big Apple dog owners once again looked to the light-polluted sky for inspiration when it came to naming their pet — with Luna crowned as the top dog name for the third year running, according to new city data.

The moniker, which comes from the Latin word for “moon,” was registered 591 times across the five boroughs in 2024, the data revealed.

New York City requires all dogs to be licensed with the Department of Health, which released the list.

Bella, which was unseated as the No. 1 pick in 2022, followed closely in second place, with 531 licenses registered, according to the data.

The true winner could be debated, however.

More than 2,600 licenses were doled out last year without names included in the paperwork.

Other popular names heard ’round the dog park include Milo, Coco, Max and Charlie, as well as the ever-popular Teddy, Lola, Rocky and Daisy.

Plenty of unique names also landed on the list, with 37 pups named Onyx, 25 dubbed Butter and 19 called Mr.

Bizarrely, 26 dogs were named Shih Tzu in 2024 — and yes, all of them were Shih Tzus.

Most of the Lunas were also Shih Tzus, though the toy dog breed was only the second most popular breed of the year.

Yorkshire Terriers received the most dog licenses, with 2,498 issued for Yorkies in 2024.

Dog ownership, however, dropped in 2024, with the number of licenses issued down 37% from 2023, according to the data.

A total of 51,863 dog licenses were approved last year.

The number of dog licenses issued each year has fluctuated greatly since reaching a peak during the pandemic, when New Yorkers rushed to adopt furry friends to keep them company during quarantine.

Between 2016 and 2020, the Health Department doled out an average of 74,000 licenses each year.

When COVID-19 struck, the office handed out a whopping 108,312 registrations and another 92,559 the following year.

That number dropped in 2022 — the same year Luna took over the top name seed — to just 49,470 but rose to 83,220 in 2023.
