PORT ST. LUCIE – Mark Vientos didn’t need to be here this week, but he sent a positive message to the Mets by arriving before most of the other position players.
He isn’t satisfied with the breakout season he had last year and is determined to maintain the work ethic that helped transform him into an important piece of the Mets lineup.
“I want the baseball season to start,” Vientos said.
Third base was a mystery for the club last spring, as Vientos and Brett Baty battled for the starting job. Baty won. But Baty’s momentum barely carried into the regular season and by mid-May he had lost the job to Vientos.
