Financier Jim Chanos has sold his NYC penthouse for $19M to a stylish fashion mogul

The Gilded Age is alive and well on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

Financier Jim Chanos, who famously shorted Enron and Tesla, has sold his penthouse triplex on top of a massive 50-foot-wide, early 20th-century mansion for $19 million, according to property records.

The Real Deal first reported news of the sale.

The modern residence, inside 3 E. 75th St., is just steps from Central Park off of Fifth Avenue. It first hit the market for $34 million in 2019. Chanos purchased the home for $20 million in 2008, according to records.

The buyer is a stylish fashion mogul who will be moving in with his family — and who requested not to be identified in this article for security reasons, Gimme Shelter can exclusively reveal.

The trade was handled off-market.

Deborah Grubman’s team at the Corcoran Group had the home’s last formal listing, when it was asking $19.75 million in the fall of 2024. Casa Blanca’s Hannah Bomze repped the buyer.

“It’s such a special apartment. The location and the width of the building is a unique combination. It’s like a townhouse in the sky,” Bomze told Gimme.

“It feels very downtown-uptown,” Bomze added. “Townhouses can be so narrow. But not this one. It’s also a very boutique building, so there isn’t a long lobby with a million neighbors, but you get the same services.”

The sale comes after Chanos shuttered his hedge funds in 2023, following almost four decades.

The fantastically large penthouse, designed by Thad Hayes, is 7,324 square feet over three floors. It was built above a mansion that was created in 1904 by C.P.H. Gilbert.

The dwelling includes three bedrooms and 3½-bathrooms — along with 2,800 square feet of outdoor space. An elevator landing opens to the main room, which features a large great room — essentially an open dining/entertaining area — with walls that serve as a blank canvass to showcase art.

There’s also an eat-in chef’s kitchen with walk-in wine storage, and a terrace with an outdoor grill and entertaining spaces overlooking Central Park.

The primary bedroom, which is located on the lower level, is accessed by stairs. It features a spa-like bath, a walk-in closet and more outdoor terrace space.

Additional bedrooms, a home office and small terraces are also found on this level. Upstairs on the third floor, there’s a screening room, a kitchenette and a second terrace.

“There are terraces on all three floors, but it’s the terraces on the top two floors that are pretty spectacular,” Bomze said.
