Trump’s problematic J6 pardons: Letters to the Editor — Jan. 29, 2025

The Issue: President Trump’s pardons for those who took part in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.

Miranda Devine’s column concerning the pardons for Jan. 6 insurrectionists only makes any logical-thinking American question the reasoning that the pardons were designed to “right wrongs” (“Righting wrong with J6 pardons,” Jan. 27).

Many of those sentenced, including QAnon shaman Jacob Chansley, pleaded guilty while others were found guilty after trial by a jury of their peers.

These people engaged in a blatant act of insurrection and they violated our Constitution by attempting to overturn an election.

Does anyone condemning President Trump’s Jan. 6 pardons remember that, in addition to former President Biden pardoning his family, he also commuted the sentences of criminals, murderers and rapists?

Sen. Ron Johnson recently helped introduce the Thin Blue Line Act, which increases penalties for criminals who target law enforcement.

One of the Jan. 6 extremists, Daniel Rodriguez, repeatedly drove a stun gun into the base of Officer Michael Fanone’s skull.

Yet when asked about Trump’s pardons for those convicted of assaulting officers, Johnson had no problem with the president’s actions.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski had the courage to denounce the blanket pardons that included those who attacked law enforcement.

In contrast, it seems Johnson’s allegiance to Trump has led him to compromise his moral integrity.

Some of the 1,500 or so convicted Jan. 6 criminals who were issued a “get out of jail free” card are promising revenge and retribution.

I might be, too, if I served time in jail for storming the Capitol and inflicting mayhem.

But I wouldn’t be angry at the judges who sentenced me, as they were simply doing right by their jobs.

I’d likely be miffed about sacrificing my freedom for Trump — who refused to accept the results of a fair election.

The left has continuously used Jan. 6 as an anti-Trump talking point. Meanwhile, ordinary citizens and law enforcement took more issue with the 2020 George Floyd riots.

Most of the Jan. 6 offenders deserved a pardon, as they were excessively charged for their crimes.

Americans want a fair sense of justice, and Trump is providing that.

The Issue: Selena Gomez posting an Instagram video, crying for illegal immigrants being deported.

Illegal migrants with criminal records were being passed around from one state to another — one of whom was Laken Riley’s murderer (“Homan nips belle of bawl,” Jan. 28).

But if you are an illegal migrant who murders, traffics, deals drugs or commits any other acts of violence, there are tears from Selena Gomez.

Please explain this to me.

Can they do no wrong?

Kim Crosby

Who are your “people,” Selena Gomez?

Are they the ones who rape and kill?

Or the ones who smuggle drugs and traffic innocent children?

Perhaps she should do another Academy Award performance to show tears of joy for the ICE agents risking their lives to protect us.

Where are Gomez’s tears for the American citizens who have been robbed, raped, attacked and killed by the huge surge of illegal immigrants?

Where are the tears for the billions of American taxpayer dollars that have been spent on dealing with illegal immigrants?
