A violent menace repeatedly slashed a 46-year-old straphanger in an unprovoked early-morning attack on a Manhattan subway train Tuesday, cops said.
The victim was riding a southbound No. 2 at West 96th Street and Broadway around 4:30 a.m. when a 54-year-old man approached him, pulled out a knife and repeatedly slashed him, police said.
The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside with slash wounds on his left elbow and left shoulder as well as the left side of his neck and head, authorities said.
NYPD officers busted the attacker on scene, and charges were pending later in the morning, authorities said.
A knife was recovered at the scene.
The brutal slashing came as the NYPD announced 700 more cops would begin patrolling the rails overnight this week.
It also came after at least seven people were slashed, shoved or beaten in the subway system over the past week.
NYPD data show that crime overall in the transit system is down 36% so far this year compared to 2024 — despite a 56% jump in misdemeanor assaults.
