‘Snake’ Cam Newton under fire for controversial interview with Dwight Howard’s ex

Dwight Howard has seemingly responded after his ex-girlfriend, Royce Reed, discussed their past on Cam Newton’s “Funky Friday” podcast.

Howard and Reed, who share son Braylon together, dated on and off for years in the early 2000s, and were previously entangled in messy headlines and legal battles.

During Monday’s installment of Newton’s show, entitled “The DARK SIDE of Dwight Howard,” Reed divulged alleged intimate details about Howard’s sexual history, among other things.

The interview touched on subjects in a way that is rarely done in an interview format in the sports world.

“A lot of snakes in this game that would do anything for views when they are broke smh,” Howard wrote Tuesday on X.

Howard’s rep did not respond to a request to comment further.

The former NBA center, recently engaged to rapper Amy Luciani, didn’t name Newton, an ex-NFL quarterback-turned-ESPN analyst, or Reed in his message.

The episode description of Newton’s conversation with Reed is listed on his YouTube page as: “Royce Reed, Dwight Howard’s ex and mother of his child, reveals the shocking and untold truth about the NBA star. For years, the media painted her as the ‘crazy one,’ but now Royce opens up, sharing her personal story of betrayal, emotional abuse, and the toll it took on her and their son.”

ESPN declined comment.

Newton responded to criticism from former Knicks guard, J.R. Smith who called the interview “hella corny.”

“Call it what you want. Respectfully… I don’t go back n forth in no comments… I ain’t hard to find sir…” Newton responded.

On Monday, Howard teased a diss track with Luciani.

“This diss me & my wife about to drop,” Howard wrote, including a photo of the pair in a recording studio. “It’s going to be the first positive diss song ever.”

Howard, who last played in the Taiwanese pro basketball league in 2023, announced his and Luciani’s engagement in December.

Reed publicly criticized Howard in an Instagram Live Stream less than two weeks later.

That same month, Howard was among the first-time nominees for the 2025 Basketball Hall of Fame.

In August, a civil lawsuit against Howard alleging sexual assault and battery was dismissed, according to a court filing obtained by ESPN.
