Last of the 43 monkeys that fled S.C. lab return — lured by peanut butter and jelly sandwiches

And then there were none.

After two months of unfettered freedom, four escaped monkeys have been captured, and returned to the South Carolina animal medical research center they cut and run from back in November.

The four rhesus macaques were the last of a larger group of 43 female monkeys that hightailed it on Nov. 6, 2024, after an employee at Alpha Genesis intentionally left the door open to their enclosure.

Security guards for the company managed to coax most of the primates back inside the facility, offering them peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and other edible treats.

The final four monkeys had been living in a nearby woods.

The group survived intense rainstorms and the area’s first snowfall since 2018, while on the loose.

Alpha Genesis breeds the primates to sell to medical facilities and research labs all around the world.

In 2022, 11 monkeys escaped from the same center through a broken chain link fence, according to the US Department of Agriculture.
