Islanders sign ex-Rangers villain Tony DeAngelo for rest of the season

In the span of seven weeks, Tony DeAngelo has gone from believing his NHL career is over to being a New York Islander.

The Islanders announced on Friday that they were bringing in the lightning-rod former Rangers defenseman on a one-year deal to help mend their blue line, which is two men down for what could be a long time after Noah Dobson hurt his right leg Monday night and with Mike Reilly still recovering from heart surgery.

Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

DeAngelo, who has played with the Hurricanes and Flyers since his unseemly Broadway exit, was essentially exiled to Russia after going unsigned in the last free agency cycle.

He played 34 games this season with SKA St. Petersburg, recording 32 points (six goals, 26 assists).

Ten days ago, his contract was mutually terminated, with the club announcing that DeAngelo had to return to North America for family reasons.
