Grading the Jets’ 19-9 home loss to the Rams on Sunday.
Offense
The Jets moved the ball with some efficiency (321 total yards) but they could not score points and that’s the objective. The Jets somehow came away with just nine points despite having three drives of 14 plays or more and not punting once in the game. Think about that.
The Jets did not punt once in the game and only scored nine points. QB Aaron Rodgers (28 of 42, 256 yards, 1 TD, 91 rating, 1 fumble) did not play poorly but could not make a big play when the Jets needed one. His fumble in the fourth quarter set the Rams up for the go-ahead touchdown.
The Jets ran the ball just 20 times compared to 44 dropbacks despite it being frigid at MetLife Stadium.
Grade: D
Defense
The Jets defense played better than it has recently. Tony Adams came away with an interception, the unit’s third in two games.
The Jets held the Rams passing game to 110 yards. Puka Nacua had 56 receiving yards and Cooper Kupp had 24.
RB Kyren Williams (23 rushes, 122 yards, 1 TD) had a good day running the ball but the Jets defense played well enough to win the game.
Grade: B
Special Teams
This group has had better days. Kicker Anders Carlson missed an extra point and a field goal, continuing the Jets’ season-long trend of kicking struggles.
Punt returner Xavier Gipson had a fumble at the end of the game, sealing the loss for the Jets. It was a dull day for punter Thomas Morstead, who did not have one punt in the game.
Grade: F
Coaching
Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich seems to have gone into “what the hell” mode and is just trying anything. He had some really questionable fourth-down calls Sunday, including going for it from his own 33 in the second quarter.
Playcaller Todd Downing had some good moments in this one, especially on the 99-yard drive to open the game. The red-zone play-calling remains an issue, but it is unclear how much that is Downing and how much Rodgers is changing the play.
This Jets staff is just counting down the days until the season is over and it’s hard to blame them.
