Sarah Ferguson has no regrets about being married to Prince Andrew.
The Duchess of York, 65, spoke about her relationship with the disgraced royal, 64, in an interview with the Sunday Times published over the weekend, and explained why she still supports her ex-husband despite his many scandals.
“I was totally and utterly in love with Andrew,” Ferguson said while reflecting on the former couple’s romance. “I would do it all over again, 100 percent. He’s the best, a great man with a great heart, and kind.”
“Our wedding was the best day of my life,” Ferguson added, referring to the pair’s 1986 nuptials at Westminster Abbey. “But I gave up my anonymity that day. I was able to because love conquers all. It’s still with us today. I won’t let him down.”
The author and philanthropist went on, “He supports me as much as I support him. He’s supported me through thick and thin, not just marriage or divorce. We agree on the three Cs — communication, compromise, compassion.”
Ferguson and Andrew were married for six years before they separated in 1992 amid scurrilous tales of mutual cheating. The exes, who divorced in 1996, share daughters Princess Beatrice, 36, and Princess Eugenie, 34.
Despite the demise of their marriage, Ferguson has continued to support her ex-hubby even when he was stripped of his royal titles and had to pay a multimillion-dollar settlement to sex accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre.
Ferguson further reflected on her romance with Queen Elizabeth II’s second-oldest son in her interview with the Sunday Times.
“I first met Andrew when I was 12,” she said. “My first thought was that I was going to marry him. We came back into each other’s lives when Diana invited me to Ascot in 1985 and six months later we were engaged. You weren’t allowed to hang out or live with each other then. Diana couldn’t, I couldn’t.”
“But they learnt from us, and Sophie [Duchess of Edinburgh] and Catherine [Princess of Wales] could,” Ferguson added. “They both got to know their boys.”
Ferguson’s sister, Jane Luedecke, told the Sunday Times that she considers Ferguson and Andrew “the best divorced couple I know.”
“They’ve done it for their children; it’s incredible,” Luedecke, 67, shared. “I came to stay at Royal Lodge in May and went riding with Andrew at Windsor Castle. It was lovely to get back on a horse and ride through the grounds again.”
Ferguson did her interview with the Sunday Times before news broke that one of Andrew’s ex staffers has been accused of being a Chinese spy. The staffer has reportedly been banned from entering the UK as a result of the allegations.
Officials have reportedly said the access the man had to the royals was a “serious breach of national security.”
Andrew told the BBC that he “ceased all contact” with his former staffer. His office also claimed that the Duke of York met the man “through official channels” and “nothing of a sensitive nature [was] ever discussed.”
