Cameron Diaz wasn’t ashamed to admit that she relies on therapy to make her marriage work.
The “Charlie’s Angels” actress, 52, appeared on her brother-in-law Joel Madden’s “Artist Friendly” podcast and said that she and her husband, Benji Madden, 45, “depend” on sitting down with a therapist.
“Therapy is a big thing in our family, thank god,” she explained on Wednesday, before sharing what she learns from the sessions.
“So you have that commitment to work on it. To not just do the same thing over and over, trying to figure out if doing it again will work this time,” she said.
Diaz continued, “Going like, ‘Why didn’t it work? How can I make it work? What’s my part? What’s the other person’s work?’ Be self-aware and go into the next attempt a little bit more equipped to hopefully come out with a different outcome.’”
“You can’t be in a marriage and have a family if … both people are not 100 percent every day,” Diaz went on. “Nobody can be 99 and the other one be 100.”
Joel, 45, confirmed that he and his wife, Nicole Richie, also go to therapy together.
The Good Charlotte musician compared therapy sessions to “going in the gym and learning new moves and building on strength.”
Diaz married Joel’s identical twin brother in 2015. The couple have two kids, 4-year-old daughter Raddix and 9-month-old son Cardinal.
Meanwhile, Joel and Richie, 43, have been married since 2010 and they have two children: daughter Harlow, 16, and son Sparrow, 15.
On the podcast, Joel told Diaz that she and Benji have done therapy “really well” together.
He also praised his twin brother for being “a warrior” who has “no fear in his body,” which Diaz agreed with.
Speaking more about her family, Diaz said that marrying Benji and having children was “the best thing that ever happened to me.”
“I was older than [Benji]. Like the fact that I hadn’t found him before … I was out there a lot longer than he was,” she explained. “You know how much we’ve grown over the last decade together and how much we accomplished. I don’t know how either one of us would have done that without one another.”
The “Bad Teacher” noted that she and Benji “wouldn’t have worked” as a couple if they met earlier in their lives.
Diaz has stayed relatively out of the spotlight after she declared herself retired from acting in 2018.
But she’s finally set to make her comeback alongside her friend Jamie Foxx in the Netflix movie “Back In Action,” which debuts Jan. 17. Production on the film was paused for months after Foxx, 56, suffered a stroke.
“We had unfortunate circumstances,” Diaz said. “Jamie had a stroke which was crazy. Thank god he’s OK. He miraculously recovered and he’s better than ever.”
