A rumble shook New York City late Sunday night. There has been a major power shift on the baseball landscape.
The Mets stole the Yankees’ prized possession, luring Juan Soto to Queens on a massive 15-year, $765 million contract, The Post’s Jon Heyman reported. The Yankees offered 16 years and $760 million.
The contract, which does not have any deferred money and has an opt-out after five years, eclipses the $700 million deal Shohei Ohtani signed last December. And if the Mets want to void Soto’s opt-out, the deal would ultimately be worth $805 million (with an increase to $55 million annually over the last decade of the deal).
It’s a move that puts an emphatic end to the Mets’ little brother narrative. And it fully endorses the ruthless reputation Steve Cohen promised when he became majority owner.
