The “caretaker” of St. John’s basketball paid homage to Lou Carnesecca for the Johnnies’ game against Kansas State on Saturday.
Rick Pitino wore a replica of the sweater Carnesecca made famous in his time on the St. John’s sideline.
Carnesecca died last Saturday at the age of 99.
This was the Red Storm’s first game since his passing.
When Pitino walked onto floor, he opened up his sports jacket to show the tailor-made sweater to the fans at Carnesecca Arena.
St. John’s held a moment of silence for Carnesecca and a video tribute.
There were multiple chants of “Lou” before the opening tip for the Hall of Fame coach.
“We lost an iconic St. John’s man,” Pitino said when Carnesecca passed. “His coaching expertise was as good as anyone in basketball but the man he was surpassed that. Rest in peace Looie. We will miss you so much.”
