Reece Davis made sure to quell any worry when Lee Corso was missing from the “College GameDay” dais on Sunday.
Davis announced on the program Saturday that Corso underwent a “minor procedure” and that’s why he wasn’t with the ESPN crew in Atlanta before the SEC championship game between No. 2 Texas and No. 5 Georgia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
“He’s doing great,” Davis said. “[We] look forward to getting Lee back here in the postseason. Know he’s watching right now, and he’ll be with us throughout the day”
The 89-year-old Corso has already had a number of health-related absences from the show this season, making him an inconsistent member of the program.
Most recently, he missed two straight weeks in October for health reasons but has been back on the programs since returning on Oct. 19.
Coroso, who has had some slip-ups this season, has become one of sports media’s most lovable personalities, known for famous mascot-head picks in front of college campus crowds.
He joined ESPN in 1987 and is the only original member of the show. ESPN added former Alabama coach Nick Saban to the “College GameDay” team this season.
ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus was asked about Coro’s future on the show in November during an episode of the “SI Media with Jimmy Traina” podcast.
“Listen, I think we’re going to do what we’ve done now for a couple of years running, which is, we’re going to have a conversation with him after the season, see where things are,” Magnus said. “He’s a special guy. He’s one of the nicest men any of your listeners or anyone on Earth has ever come across. And he’s been absolutely iconic on the show.”
