The 37-year-old man was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence and the restaurant is closed indefinitely.
A man was arrested after allegedly driving under the influence (DUI) after crashing into a Thai restaurant in the Mile-End and damaging three nearby parked cars.
Police received a call at 3:35 a.m. after a car collided into Restaurant Thaïlande on the corner of St. Urbain St. and Bernard St., according Montreal police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant.
The 37-year-old driver was still in the car with non-life threatening injuries when police arrived at the scene. He was arrested shortly after the incident and was taken to hospital, Brabant said.
Witnesses say the vehicle was driving south along St. Urbain when the vehicle collided with three parked cars and eventually crashed into the restaurant. “We’re talking about major damage the to front door, and a part of the side wall is destroyed,” Brabant said.
“We can’t even remove the car,” said one of the restaurant co-owners. She said the restaurant will be closed indefinitely, and is unsure at this point if the damages will be covered by insurance.
Two apartments above the restaurant were evacuated by the fire department after deciding the structure was likely unstable after the accident.
The inhabitants were taken care of by Red Cross personnel and did not have any injuries, Brabant said.
An evaluation is taking place Saturday to ensure their apartments are safe to re-enter.
