ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown” will be without Randy Moss for an indefinite period.
Moss asked viewers last Sunday for prayers about an undisclosed medical issue he was going through.
ESPN announced Friday that Moss will be stepping away from the network’s longstanding Sunday NFL pregame show “for an extended time to focus on a personal health challenge.”
“For nearly a decade, Randy has been an invaluable member of the team, consistently elevating ‘Countdown’ with his insight and passion. He has ESPN’s full support, and we look forward to welcoming him back when he is ready,” the network said in a statement.
During Sunday’s show, Moss noted that he might have to wear sunglasses, before delivering a message about his health.
“I just wanted to let the viewers know that me and my wife, me and my family, we are battling something internally,” Moss said on the program. “I have some great doctors around me. I couldn’t miss the show. I wanted to be here with you guys. I feel great.
“But if y’all see me with these Michigan turnover glasses that I have on, it’s not being disrespectful because I’m on television, man. I’m battling something. I need all the prayer warriors.”
Moss was an all-time great wideout most known for his time with the Vikings and Patriots.
He also played for the Raiders, Titans and 49ers in an NFL career that spanned from 1998-2012 (with 2011 as a gap year) and included six Pro Bowl selections and four first-team All-Pro honors.
