Quebec wants to change rules for contract talks with public-sector unions

Treasury Board president Sonia LeBel says she will soon table legislation.

Saying the existing “process of negotiations no longer has a raison d’être in 2024,” Quebec Treasury Board president Sonia LeBel informed the National Assembly on Wednesday that she will soon table legislation changing the rules for contract talks with public-sector unions.

At the moment, those negotiations are governed by strict rules that see talks carried out at the sectorial and union local levels as well as a calendar for proceedings.

The Legault government’s last negotiation with the province’s public-sector unions cost taxpayers dearly.

At the moment, the province is still trying to reach an agreement with its daycare workers.
