Denis Coderre faces federal legal action for tax debt

Coderre’s quarter of a million dollars in income tax debt pushed Ottawa to file a lien.

Denis Coderre’s tax troubles have turned for the worse: the federal government has now taken legal action to recover the more than $200,000 the former Montreal mayor and Quebec Liberal Party candidate owes in income tax debt.

On Monday, the federal government filed a lien on Denis Coderre’s property in Montreal North to settle his tax debt.

Revenue Canada opened proceedings against Coderre in the Federal Court on Sept. 12 in an effort to recover the $261,303.98 he owes the federal government.

If he did not sell the property himself, both the federal and Quebec governments would be entitled to seize and sell the property to settle the debt.
