Auditor to release report on hotel procurement, SaskPower net-zero targets

The report will be released Tuesday afternoon and will look at how SaskPower is transitioning to non-emitting energy sources, hotel room procurement for social services clients and more.

Saskatchewan’s provincial auditor will release a report today outlining government programs and services that need improvement.

It will also look at how SaskPower, a Crown electrical utility, is transitioning to non-emitting energy sources. SaskPower has a plan to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or earlier. Last year, Premier Scott Moe highlighted 2050, not the federal goal of 2035, as the target for a net-zero electrical grid in Saskatchewan.

The report will also cover procuring hotel rooms for social services clients.

The Opposition NDP raised the issue last year when it found one of Grewal’s hotels had raised rates for a social services client when the ministry started paying her bill.

Those complaints prompted the government to do a review of its procurement policy. Social services staff must now seek cost quotes from at least three hotels before securing a room in one of the larger cities, selecting the lowest-cost hotel that meets individual needs and safety considerations.

More to come …
