Obituary: Abraham Fuks led McGill’s Faculty of Medicine for more than a decade

Fuks, who died peacefully on Dec. 1, is being remembered for his contribution to medical research and teaching.

Dr. Abraham Fuks, a physician, academic and researcher who led McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine for more than a decade, has died.

A graduate of McGill’s Faculty of Medicine in 1970, Fuks was dean of the faculty from 1995 to 2006.

“His legacy as a clinician, researcher, educator and community leader leaves an enduring impact on the field of medicine and the lives of countless individuals who benefited from his knowledge, mentorship and compassion,” the death notice reads.

He was also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, a member of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and an Officer of the Order of Canada. His 2018 appointment to the order was for his “manifold contributions to the advancement of Canadian medical research, education and scholarship,” including his research on Type 1 diabetes, tumours and “the impact of language on the physician-patient relationship.”

“A dedicated academic leader, he has advocated for high ethical standards in the conduct of clinical trials involving human patients, and has significantly influenced medical practice through his teaching,” according to the announcement of his appointment to the order.

Fuks, who chaired McGill’s institutional review board for 14 years and was the university’s research integrity officer from 2009 to 201, also studied the ethical aspects of designing research trials involving human subjects.

“Abe will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his extended family, friends and colleagues,” the obituary says.
