Alleged Montreal street gang member was found dead in cell, lawyer confirms

The SQ confirmed on Monday that Andrew (Ali Baba) Luberisse’s death is being investigated as a homicide.

Luberisse, 35, of Terrebonne was recently arrested by the Montreal police in a case involving alleged conjugal violence. He was scheduled to appear before Quebec Court Judge Christian Tremblay on Monday, but his lawyer, Chloé Potel, informed the court that this was impossible.

“Unfortunately, Mr. Luberisse was found dead in his cell at R.D.P. (on Sunday),” the lawyer said.

Tremblay appeared to know instantly what Potel was referring to and agreed to set another date in the case so that a death certificate can be presented in court.

The Sûreté du Québec has taken over the investigation. On Monday, a spokesperson for the SQ said the death is now considered a homicide. She also said that no arrests have been made.

The court record of Luberisse’s latest case listed his alias as Ali Baba, his nickname among street gangs.

In 2022, in a case heard at the Montreal courthouse in which Luberisse was not charged, he was described by an expert on street gangs as a member of the Profit Kollectaz, a gang that has been tied to several acts of violence in northern Montreal in recent years.

In a judgment delivered in a different case last year, Luberisse was described as a core member of the gang based in Rivière-des-Prairies. That decision was delivered in a murder case brought against a rapper named Gretzky (Flawless) Marcellus, who was convicted of murder in 2022, and it described how Luberisse and Marcellus were “featured” in a video tied to the Profit Kollectaz.

Another court decision, delivered in 2021, makes reference to how Luberisse once posted a video on YouTube in which he mocks the victim of an attempted murder and mentioned how the man was now forced to “s–t in a bag.”
