Could a Caleb Williams-Kliff Kingsbury reunion be coming to the Windy City?
The current offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders is considered a top candidate for the Bears’ head coach vacancy following Friday’s firing of Matt Eberflus, according to NFL.com.
Kingsbury, 45, is in his first season in Washington after spending 2023 as a senior offensive assistant at USC, where he worked with then-Trojans quarterback Williams, now in his rookie season under center in Chicago.
Before that, Kingsbury coached the Arizona Cardinals from 2019 through 2022.
He is currently spearheading an offense that boasts rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, whose Commanders enter Sunday’s game against the Titans at 7-5.
In addition to Kingsbury, NFL.com named the Lions’ offensive and defensive coordinators, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, respectively, as potential candidates, as well as former Titans coach Mike Vrabel.
It’s been a tumultuous few weeks for the 4-8 Bears, who fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron in mid-November before parting ways with Eberflus.
The third-year head coach came under fire Thursday amid poor clock management in the final moments of their crushing 23-20 loss to the Lions on Thanksgiving.
Eberflus was fired the following day and Thomas Brown was elevated to interim head coach.
Brown “is expected to get a look in Chicago’s upcoming head coach search,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday.
The Bears are one of three head coaching vacancies at the moment.
The Jets and Saints parted ways with Robert Saleh and Dennis Allen, respectively, earlier this year.
Saleh was fired in October after a 2-3 start to the season while Allen was let go in November following a seven-game skid.
The Bears will look to rebound from their Thanksgiving debacle when they visit the 49ers on Dec. 8.
