Austin Shanks leads Saskatchewan Rush to overtime victory in NLL opener

Midway through the extra quarter, Saskatchewan’s Austin Shanks netted his second goal of the game to give the Rush the win.

It was a thriller of a game Saturday night as the Saskatchewan Rush opened their 2024-25 National Lacrosse League campaign with a 10-9 overtime victory against the host Albany Firewolves.

Midway through the extra quarter, Saskatchewan’s Austin Shanks netted his second goal of the game to give the Rush the win.

Prior to that, the two teams exchanged goals throughout the entire game, with each quarter ending in a tie.

Even when the Firewolves took a two-goal lead early in the third quarter, the Rush answered with three goals of their own to take the 6-5 lead, only for Albany to tie the game once again in the final minute of action.

In the fourth quarter, Saskatchewan took a 9-8 lead with 2:09 left on the clock, but Albany tied it up with 12 seconds remaining to make it 9-9 and send the game to overtime.

Zach Manns led the Rush with four goals and one assist.

Frank Scigliano made 49 of 58 saves in net for Saskatchewan, while his Firewolves counterpart Doug Jamieson stopped 43 of 53.

Next up for the Rush will be their home opener against the Halifax Thunderbirds on Dec. 14.
