The Giants may want to avoid their TVs as feverishly as they do competitive games.
Rex Ryan and the “Get Up!” crew unloaded on the Giants on Monday morning after they no-showed in an embarrassing 30-7 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday.
“The Giants played well,” Ryan said. “Saquon Barkley went for 302 scrimmage yards, 255 rushing. Xavier McKinney leads the league, had his seventh interception (for the Packers). Leonard Williams has 2 1/2 sacks for Seattle. So, the Giants are playing great.
“But the little Giants, The Little Giants, stink. Xavier McKinney, they could have used a player like that. The Giants haven’t had an interception for 10 weeks now. Is that even possible?”
Ryan, who is openly campaigning to be the Jets’ next head coach, angrily suggested that Giants GM Joe Schoen be fired for the team they fielded Sunday.
“I feel bad for Brian Daboll. He is a good football coach,” Ryan said. “This GM right now, that’s the one. I would just say gone, get the hell out of our building.”
Schoen’s decisions have led to a disastrous 2-9 season that seemed to hit rock bottom Sunday in a lifeless performance at MetLife Stadium against an injury-riddled Tampa Bay team that had lost four in a row heading into the matchup.
Tedy Bruschi agreed with Ryan’s assessment and said he thinks the decisions to let go of team leaders has led to a “fractured” locker room.
The Giants had benched starting quarterback Daniel Jones at the beginning of last week in a decision that left the locker room “confused,” according to team leader Dexter Lawrence.
They ultimately released Jones on Friday after dropping him to fourth-string, which was done to ensure that they would not have to pay out the $23 million injury clause in his contract.
“The Giants brass made a business decision this week. The players have returned the favor and are making a business decision today. This organization needs a reboot!” former Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes wrote on X on Sunday.
The disastrous effort against the Buccaneers caused a frustrated Malik Nabers to say the team played “soft as f–k” and complained that he did not start getting the ball till they were down, 30-0.
“Then you let Daniel Jones walk out, we don’t want him to play because we don’t want him to get hurt. We know you’re our best quarterback, but we don’t want to you get hurt and owe you all that money,” Ryan said.
“Great message you send to the locker room. You got exactly what you deserve. Did that team look like they had no energy, no juice? Why? You gave up on them. Don’t tell me the players gave up on you. You gave up on them when you made this move. It’s such a ridiculous thing. This isn’t one game left in the season, there’s seven games left. You know what? It’s not Daniel Jones’ fault that you gave him $40 million, it’s not. It’s not his fault you didn’t sign Saquon Barkley.
“It’s your damn fault. What are you representing? You are going to let a guy that is a once-in-a-lifetime player in Saquon Barkley walk out the door. He’s also an amazing teammate. Would you like to have that leadership in your locker room? Is he an unbelievable man in the community? Absolutely. That’s what you want to build your franchise with.”
