Baker Mayfield’s Tommy DeVito impression might have been too over the top for some.
Not long after the Buccaneers quarterback went viral Sunday for mimicking the Giants’ signal caller’s signature hand gesture during a 30-7 blowout win over Big Blue, Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone reacted to Mayfield’s touchdown celebrations in a post on X.
“Ay bro, did that a little too aggressive for my liking 🤨,” Anzalone posted alongside a video of Mayfield raising his hands in the air after scoring a rushing touchdown.
Mayfield, who went 24-for-30 against a listless 2-9 Giants team, told reporters afterward the move was a tribute to DeVito, the 2023 fan-favorite who was anointed starter over a benched Daniel Jones, who was released by the team last Friday.
“It was a tribute. A tribute to Tommy,” Mayfield said, according to ESPN. “… “Most of the time, I don’t know what I’m going to do so … spontaneous stuff.
“New York fans love Tommy here, so give ’em something they like.”
DeVito, who was sacked four times in the Giants’ sixth straight loss, said he wasn’t privy to Mayfield’s revelry until after the Week 12 contest.
The quarterback has previously said the celebration is tied to his Italian heritage.
“They were having a good game. They celebrated,” the second-year pro said, per ESPN. “It is what it is. Kind of happened last year. It’s going to happen, I guess.”
Several X users responded to Anzalone’s Mayfield take, with some calling attention to Detroit’s lone loss of the season: a Week 2 defeat to the Buccaneers.
“Should’ve done something about it week 2 🤷♂️ you can hold that L instead,” one user replied.
“Still hurting from the L huh?” another posted.
In addition to commentating on Mayfield, Anzalone — currently on injured reserve after breaking his forearm in a Week 11 win over the Jaguars— hyped up the Lions on social media after they secured their 10th win of the year, a 24-6 victory over the Colts.
“Proud of the guys today!!!” he exclaimed on X.
Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed last week that Anzalone would be out “six to eight weeks.”
The Lions own the No. 1 seed in the NFC, while the 5-6 Buccaneers are in the hunt for a playoff spot following their thrashing over the Giants.
