I always consider Sporting Christmas well and truly launched when we hear from the CIBC Funseekers.
This pensioners group has been a longtime, reliable friend of our annual effort to aid the Salvation Army with its Christmas hamper program. Getting their donation, and a note, is a neat tradition each year.
“We hold an annual fall dinner and take up a collection every year,” writes Gladys Winkel. “This was started in 1996 by Forrest Conklin (now deceased) and it has carried on ever since.”
Conklin, who was also an accomplished local curler, donated to our very first Sporting Christmas in 1976. So that connection goes back a long way.
We’re still very early in our campaign, and it’s nice to see some good sports propel us out of the starting blocks — an anonymous donor sent a very generous gift, and friends and family members are remembered today.
The postal strike has made things more challenging for us this year, but please do not let that deter you from sending a donation our way. I’ll have a story coming next week on the growing need in this city for those Christmas hampers, and on somebody whose family once benefitted greatly from one.
