Giants release Daniel Jones in shocking move just days after embarrassing demotion

Daniel Jones is moving on.

The quarterback, relegated to fourth string after losing his starting job with the Giants this week, was released Friday after making a request to the team.

“Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him,” owner John Mara said in a statement. “We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out.

“We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Jones will have to go through the NFL’s waiver process, though he is expected to go unclaimed due to the remaining $13,805,555 he guaranteed for the rest of the season. If he does clear waivers, he’ll become a free agent.

The Giants can now turn back to Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers, in which Tommy DeVito will get the start with Drew Lock backing him up.

Tim Boyle, whose addition to the practice squad this week sent Jones to the scout team, will be the team’s No. 3 quarterback.

At 2-8 entering Week 12, the Giants are expected to be at the top of the draft this offseason, with few marquee options at quarterback.
