Pro-Palestinian protests planned as some CEGEP, university students boycott classes

Rallies are expected outside Dawson, Concordia and other post-secondary institutions.

Demonstrations are expected outside Dawson College, Concordia University and other post-secondary institutions.

The school’s student union said a rally Thursday afternoon is part of “a historic strike across so-called Quebec and internationally to demand an end to the genocide in Gaza and stand in solidarity with students facing repression across CEGEP and university campuses.”

At Concordia, students in some departments have voted to strike for two days.

Concordia student groups say they want the university “to divest from companies and institutions that profit from Israeli apartheid.” They also accuse Concordia of “repressing student activism for Palestine on campus,” a charge denied by the administration.

The university is to remain open.

Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, a Quebec group that aims to promote justice, development and peace in the Middle East, has noted that pro-Palestinian protests have largely remained peaceful. It has accused university officials of framing them as violent to cast organizers in a negative light.

Some McGill students say they’ll also strike Thursday and Friday. Via social media, students in that university’s South Asian Studies program said they have voted to boycott classes.

Some Université de Québec à Montréal students have also voted to strike, as have some French CEGEPs, including Collège de Maisonneuve.
