Illegal migrant deported before standing trial in 125 mph drunken crash that killed 3 — and prosecutors want him back in US

An illegal immigrant was deported back to Honduras before he could face manslaughter charges in a drunken Florida car wreck that killed three people — and prosecutors now want him to face the music.

Erwin Rommel Recinos Zuniga, 28, was allegedly behind the wheel of a red Kia Forte going at more than 125 mph at 3 a.m. in February 2022 when he smashed the car into a light pole in Miami.

Two of the five occupants of the car were ejected, and three were killed, WTVJ-TV News reported.

Zuniga was arrested and hit with a slew of drunk driving, vehicular manslaughter, reckless driving and other charges — but has yet to stand trial because he was inexplicably allowed to remain under house arrest and was deported back to Honduras on Sept. 6, the outlet reported.

On Thursday, a spokesperson for Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said the office is now “attempting to have Mr. Zuniga returned from Honduras to face trial.”

The blunder infuriated the families of the victims.

“They say they are still investigating,” Miriam Castillo, the sister of crash victim Paola Sabillon, told WTVJ this week. “That’s literally all. That’s all they say. They have not given us an ounce of hope.”

Meanwhile, a lawyer for Miami-Dade Corrections told the outlet that the department’s policies and procedures have been updated to “prevent this from happening again.”

The state attorney’s office said Thursday that it would not comment on the case for fear it could interfere with efforts to bring Zuniga to justice.
