Robot dogs have been standing watch at President-elect Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home ever since he won the US election.
A robotic guard was spotted on at least two occasions patrolling the outside of Trump’s resort, in a gesture of heightened security after he survived two assassination attempts.
Two days after the election, a black, white and red robotic dog was captured on video walking along a path and lake at the Palm Beach residence near a Secret Service agent dressed in blue.
It had a camera mounted on it and US Secret Service and ‘do not pet’ lettering printed on it.
Robotic dogs are ‘Secret Service assets’, according to the agency’s chief of communications, Anthony Guglielmi.
‘Safeguarding the President-elect is a top priority,’ he told USA Today on Friday.
‘While we cannot get into the specific capabilities, the robotic dogs are equipped with surveillance technology, and an array of advanced sensors that support our protective operations.’
On Monday, Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon joked about the robots in light of an outlandish claim that Trump repeated on the campaign trail, including at his debate against Vice President Kamala Harris.
‘Get this. Robot dogs have been deployed at Mar-a-Lago to help protect Trump,’ said Fallon.
‘And now Trump’s claiming, “They’re eating the robot cats, they’re eating the robot… They’re eating the Roombas!”’
Trump infamously said during the debate of migrants in Springfield, Ohio: ‘They’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats. They’re eating the pets of the people that live there.’
Despite Trump’s opponents pointing out that the claims were unfounded, the remarks did not stop him from a landslide victory over Harris.
On Tuesday, a robotic canine was seen roaming the grounds of Trump’s Florida estate again.
The robots were deployed nearly two months after a Secret Service agent saw a rifle poking out of a fence at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach while Trump was golfing.
Agents fired and Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was arrested while fleeing on a road about 50 miles from the golf course. No one was injured in the incident.
