Private equity honcho Jeffrey Leeds, the founder of Leeds Equity Partners, and his wife Elizabeth Marshall Leeds, have re-listed their duplex at New York’s famed 740 Park Ave. for $24 million — down from its $28.5 million ask last year — according to a StreetEasy listing update.
The high-gloss Upper East Side building is where Jackie Kennedy Onassis spent some of her childhood — her maternal grandfather, James Thomas Lee, was the building’s developer — and it is where titans of industry have called home. It has long had the reputation as one of New York’s most elite co-ops.
The Leeds bought the five-bedroom, pre-war dwelling for $22.5 million in 2016.
They purchased it from Elizabeth Macklowe Swig, the daughter of 432 Park Ave. developer Harry Macklowe, who once shared the duplex with her then-husband, real estate mogul Kent Swig. The co-op, on the second and third floors, had first listed for $32.5 million in 2014 — significantly higher than for what it sold for — and spent two years for sale, according to records. At the time of their ownership, according to the real-estate blog Curbed, the 16-room duplex was also in danger of foreclosure due to some allegedly shady loans.
As it stands, the unit is in mint condition and designed by Stephen Sills, said listing broker Chase Landow of Serhant.
The storied building was designed by architects Rosario Candela and Arthur Loomis Harmon, and built in 1929. A private elevator landing opens to a gallery with marble floors, a built-in wall mirror and curved stairs. Double doors lead to a formal dining room that seats 12, a living room with a fireplace and a wood-paneled library with another fireplace. A windowed, eat-in chef’s kitchen comes with two refrigerators and dual gas ranges.
Details throughout include crown moldings and original Versailles hardwood floors. All bedrooms are on the upper floor. The main bedroom suite comes with plenty of closets, a walk-in dressing room and a windowed ensuite bathroom.
The building’s amenities include a gym and storage units. Pets are “warmly welcomed,” according to the listing.
Past and present residents at 740 Park have included John D. Rockefeller — whose apartment is now owned by Stephen Schwarzman — as well as Julia Koch and Vera Wang.
In 2021, the Leeds became the beneficial owners of a $35.6 million Palm Beach mansion that they purchased via an entity, according to reports.
