Top 10 signs David Letterman is unhappy after Election Day.
No. 1: The former “Late Show” host’s Instagram account posted a video of Green Day performing “American Idiot” hours after Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election.
The clip, from Letterman’s CBS show in 2004, features lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong and his band wailing stinging lyrics such as “Not a part of the redneck agenda” and “One nation controlled by the media.”
Green Day’s hit record “American Idiot” was in large part a response to the Republican presidency of George W. Bush and the Iraq War he ushered the US into. It was nominated for the 2005 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and was made into a Broadway musical in 2010.
The social media page for Letterman, 77, didn’t offer political commentary in the post’s caption, simply saying “Green Day performs ‘American Idiot.’”
It is also unclear if the late-night vet does his own posting, or even if he personally approves what goes up on his account, which is largely archival material from his decades on TV and recent videos of the funnyman shot by other people.
However, Letterman has supported Democrats— including Harris.
Back in July, he hosted a fund-raiser for the candidate in Martha’s Vineyard, which was attended by her husband, Doug Emhoff.
The Massachusetts summer event was originally meant to be thrown for President Joe Biden, but the host quickly shifted gears after the incumbent dropped out of the race and endorsed Harris.
There’s also no lost love between him and Trump.
In 2019, Letterman, who left his CBS show in 2015, told “Today” of the then-commander in chief, “As an American, I don’t like this man as president of our country. I love being an American, but I don’t feel he represents me, and I don’t like that.”
