Pride and Prejudice is reportedly set to get a ‘progressive’ Netflix makeover with a huge TV star attached.
It was reported last month that the streaming giant was looking to rework Jane Austen’s iconic novel into a TV series with Everything I Know About Love creator Dolly Alderton on board to write the show.
Fans have already speculated who could play the central roles of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy, following in the footsteps of Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in the popular 2005 film adaptation.
It was previously reported that Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones was in line for the role of Elizabeth, but it has since been rumoured that The Crown’s Emma Corrin could take on the job.
‘Dolly is working on a Pride And Prejudice script for Netflix and thinks Emma would be perfect to play Elizabeth,’ a source claimed.
They continued to The Sun: ‘She is a big fan of Emma’s work, most notably in The Crown where Emma played Princess Diana.
‘Dolly is also very progressive and forward-thinking, so thinks that having a non-binary star in the role would be a brilliant move.’
Lady Chatterley’s Lover star Corrin came out as non-binary in 2021 and updated their pronouns publicly to ‘she/they’ and then ‘they/them.’
Corrin previously said they were ‘taken aback’ by the backlash they received after revealing they were non-binary, telling Vanity Fair: ‘Naively, maybe, it took me aback how much hate I got for that. It was quite a reality check. But for a lot of people, it did help.
‘Especially around conversation of gender and stuff, it does help a lot of people to see someone living as a non-binary person in the world. I know how much other people’s accounts helped me, that’s my motivation for keeping my social media at the moment.’
They added: ‘There aren’t a lot of non-binary parts out there. We need to be supporting queer writers and developing projects and welcoming these narratives into the creative space.
‘But also, being non-binary for me is a very fluid space where it’s not a rejection of femininity or masculinity, it’s sort of an embrace of both.’
Little is known about Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice adaptation, which is said to be in early development.
As such, there have been no confirmed casting or release date announcements.
Corrin will next hit our screens in Robert Eggers’ adaptation of the classic vampire film Nosferatu alongside Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe.
They will star as Anna Harding, a loose adaptation of Lucy Westenra from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula.
