Patient stabbed by roommate in CHUM hospital room, Montreal police say

The suspected attacker had been restrained by hospital staff by the time police arrived.

A 53-year-old man is recovering from stab wounds to the upper body after he was attacked early Tuesday by a man with whom he shared a hospital room at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM).

The incident occurred around 1:15 a.m. at the St-Denis St. medical complex, and the motive for the attack has yet to be made public. The suspected attacker, a 35-year-old man, had been restrained by hospital staff by the time police arrived.

Montreal police spokesperson Véronique Dubuc said the suspect had been armed with a sharp object and hospital staff intervened to stop the attack.

While initially described as being seriously injured, the victim’s life was deemed later by medical authorities not to be in danger.

Police sealed off the hospital room where the attack occurred, witnesses were being interviewed and the investigation was continuing as of sunrise Tuesday.
