Saskatoon police charge man with arson after suspicious fires in Mayfair area

Between 9:21 a.m. and 10:37 a.m. on Thursday, crews responded to two garage fires, a deck fire and two fence fires.

Saskatoon police say they arrested a suspect after firefighters were called to four separate blazes in Saskatoon’s Mayfair neighbourhood over a period of just over an hour on Thursday morning.

No injuries were reported.

The first call came in at 9:21 a.m. about a detached garage fire in the 1500 block of Avenue E North. It spread to a garage across the alley on Avenue F North.

At 9:53 a.m., crews were called to a deck fire in the 1400 block of Avenue D North.

Less than 10 minutes later, a fence was on fire in the 100 block of 31st Street West.

Finally, at 10:37 a.m., crews were called to another fence fire on 29th Street West.

All of the fires were extinguished shortly after crews arrived.

In a news release on Friday morning, city police said officers who arrived at the scene of the fence fire in the 100 block of 31st Street West saw a man “matching the description of the suspect a few blocks away from where another fire was actively burning.”

He was arrested without incident.

The 31-year-old is charged with arson causing damage to property.

“The man also had a warrant for being unlawfully at large and was found to be breaching court-ordered conditions,” the release noted.
