Matthew Perry’s mother has shared she believes the late Friends star had a ‘premonition’ shortly before his death.
The actor, who played Chandler Bing in the beloved sitcom, died on October 28 last year at the age of 54.
A police investigation into his death is ongoing and last month five people – including his personal assistant and two doctors – were charged.
Now, a few days before the first anniversary of Perry’s death, his mother has spoken about reflective comments her son made not long before he died.
‘He went through a period, interestingly enough, just before he died when he was showing me one of his new houses,’ Suzanne Morrison shared during an interview with the Today show, which will air in full on Monday.
‘He came up to me, and he said, “I love you so much, and I’m so happy to be with you now”…it was almost as though it was a premonition or something.’
Morrison, who is married to Dateline correspondent Keith Morrison, shared that she ‘didn’t think’ much of her son’s comment at the time, although it did strike her as slightly unusual.
‘How long has it been since we’ve had a conversation like that? It’s been years,’ she remembered thinking to herself.
‘I think there was something; there was an inevitability to what was going to happen next to him, and he felt it very strongly,’ she continued.
‘But he said, “I’m not frightened anymore,’ and it worried me”.’
Perry was the only child of Morrison and ex-husband John Bennett Perry.
Following his death the family released a statement that read: ‘We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother.’
‘Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love,’ they added.
After he was found dead in a jacuzzi, Perry’s cause of death was eventually ruled as being due to the ‘acute effects of ketamine’, while drowning and coronary artery disease were also listed as contributing factors.
The actor’s doctor, Mark Chavez, as well as one of his friends, Erik Fleming, and his assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, each pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute ketamine during their respective trials in September and October.
According to court documents, Perry was taking ketamine 6 to 8 times a day in the time leading up to his death, which was provided to him by a ‘network of corrupt doctors’.
Perry struggled with addiction for years, dating back to his time on Friends, when he became one of the biggest stars of his generation as Chandler Bing.
He starred alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004 on the mega-hit sitcom.
