Quality Street axes popular product — and it’s the end of a Christmas ‘tradition’

Christmas is in chaos, or at least it is for Quality Street fans, as the beloved personalised tins won’t be available at John Lewis stores this year.

Over recent years, it’s become a tradition for some to head to the department store, and fill up their own purple pick n mix tins.

Whether you’re choosing a couple extra Toffee Pennys, Caramel Swirls (and perhaps leaving out the Coconut Eclair…) the power of choice is too good to deny.

And you can even add your own name – or the name of your lucky recipient – onto the list for that extra special touch.

But this year, while the pick n mix will be available in participating stores, the option to personalise the Quality Street tin is a thing of the past – and it hasn’t gone down well with fans of the festive sweets.

Taking to the social media platform, X, @whereisedm was the first to raise the alarm about the much loved ‘tradition’.

They wrote: ‘No personalised tins of Quality Street this year — it’s a tradition —please bring it back — it’s bad enough that it’s moved from the Christmas Shop on to the basement in Oxford Street’.

A disappointed @lottiegeography also posted about the change, telling followers: ‘Took my personalised quality street tin for a refill at JL Oxford Street and wanted to get a few personalised tins as presents, but they’re not doing it anymore. No one knew why. Please tell me it will be happening this year?’

Unfortunately for those who had planned to include the tins in their Christmas haul this year, the tweets weren’t some cruel joke. They are, in fact, true.

Quality Street’s official account confirmed the change in a tweet telling chocolate lovers that they are ‘unable to offer personalisation this year’ but they are offering a ‘limited-edition Christmas 2024 tin’ instead.

In addition to the limited edition tins, the brand will also be offering Christmas pouches available in six different designs.

Speaking to Metro, a John Lewis spokesperson also weighed in on the matter: ‘When it comes to personalisation, it’s all inside the tin this year – whether you’re Team Green Triangle or strictly Coffee Creme, our shops are the only place where you can completely customise the contents of your Quality Street tin.

‘While we no longer sell personalised name tins, fans can get the beautiful, limited-edition Christmas 2024 option. We’ve also introduced pouches with messages to suit special occasions, like “Quality Christmas”‘.

Thankfully, the pick n’ mix will also continue to be available in participating stores, and X users have been warned to get in quick so you don’t miss out on your favourite flavours.

‘Last year… they’d run out of Strawberry Creams. I was fuming’, @k_gilbey said.

Another warned fellow fans not to attempt to beat the system: ‘We all liked the Coconut one best, so we’d go to Woolworth’s & fill a bag full… one year, we were told we couldn’t have them all because we hadn’t technically mixed them.’

According to the John Lewis website, 20 stores are offering Quality Street this year, including London’s Oxford Street store, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds and Cardiff.
