Police in Gatineau fatally shot a man after an officer was severely injured with a knife during an incident late Wednesday.

Gatineau police said the man was shot on St-Rédempteur St. in the city’s Hull district a little before midnight Wednesday.
While not specifying the reason their officers were deployed, the police department said officers opened fire after one of their colleagues was seriously injured with a knife.
The police officer was taken to hospital and his life is not deemed to be in danger. The attacker died of his wounds.
A crisis response cell has been set up to aid in the investigation and assist employees affected by the incident.
The BEI investigates whenever a death or serious injury occurs during a police operation in Quebec.
